Périgord's name comes from « Pétrucores », the Gallic people who lived along the banks of the Dordgogne river. The history of mankind has left its mark on the varied landscapes to be found in the area ; traces of human life, stretching from prehistoric times and up until the 100 years war and as far as the Second World War, have been found in Périgord.

The area bears witness to Périgord's unique and fascinating role in history, from cradle of mankind (cave dwellings) to pillar of tradition (castles, the Renaissance age). It has lovingly preserved the cultural richness of its past, made the most of its varied landscapes and encouraged a superior quality of tourism in this day and age.

There is not only one Périgord, There is the green Périgord, full of lush, fertile scenery, the white Périgord with its chalk cliffs, the purple Périgord famous for it's vineyards and lastly the black Périgord, nestling between Aquitaine to the east and the foothills of the Massif Central to the west.
